Hubert TRUFFAUX is the manager of ABC Metal, a company specialized in the design and manufacturing of machines for the industry and farm-produce industry.
At the time, nothing of the sort existed on the market. To validate the concept, he finalized a prototype and he registered the first patents at the same time. Then there was a successful demonstration to the producers particularly the Californian ones.
In 1998, the first self-propelled 4-row picker-harvester was born. At the time, nobody had faith in the mechanization of the harvest of the 21st century vegetable.
Having previously worked in the nuclear industry and automatism, Hubert was used to taking up challenges. For the food market, he decided to add a machine tool carried out by optics, in order to produce florets on the site of the fields.
The tests and patents were good; the only weakness was a slow speed of work.
The seedsmen from all over the world started to work with him. As they have always done for all the other vegetables, they have been improving the broccoli varieties to enable a more homogeneous maturity.
Several demonstrations and sales of machines were carried out: in 2003 in Australia for example, and also in the Netherlands, Spain and France.
Nowadays, with the 2-row broccoli picker-harvester, it is now possible to harvest up to 0.25 hectare or 0.6 acre per hour.
